Mass failure in WAEC, NECO embarrassing

YENAGOA — Wife of the Bayelsa State governor, Mrs. Alayingi Sylva, Wednesday, described as national embarrassment, the poor results recorded by students at the West African Examination Council, WAEC, and National Examination Council, NECO, examinations in the country.

Expressing concern at the sad turn of event, Mrs. Sylva blamed the dismal result announced by the examination bodies on the poor education system and the non-reading culture among youths in the country. She urged state governments to implement new educa-tional policies and struc-tures to reverse the trend.

Mrs. Sylva, who spoke at the presentation of over 500 subsidised Zinox mini laptops to pupils and teachers of secondary schools in the state, said the poor school system and the non-reading culture should be solve with the introduction of students to computer education and operation.

She said: “A nation without an affirmative posture on computer education may not achieve the desired result. Without compu-ter in the curriculum, the students are nothing.

“You can see the recent result of national exami-nations, they were natio-nal embarrassment. Ba-yelsa was rated one of the poorest in the results, but we are now picking up.”

She noted that the positive results being recorded by students in the state were due to the introduction of computers.

education and distribution of computers to pupils and teachers.

Mrs. Sylva pointed out that the partnership with Zinox Computers was a progressive one and done to better the standard of education in the country.

Managing Director of Zinox Computers, Mr. Umukoro Inonetimi, at the event, said though the partnership with states on renewed effort to create reading culture and improve standard of performance in examinations through computer distribution and education started with Bayelsa, the acceptance of the project by the wife of the state governor was key to the success of the project.
